Facelift recovery time, week by week

What the days after a facelift actually look like, without the drama.

In short

  • Most swelling and bruising settle over the first two to three weeks.
  • Many people feel presentable enough for quiet social settings around two weeks.
  • The face keeps refining for months as the last swelling resolves.
  • Recovery is individual; your surgeon's specific aftercare instructions come first.

Recovery is the part people quietly worry about most, often more than the surgery itself. The fear is usually the unknown, so here is a realistic picture of how healing tends to unfold. Think of it as a general map, not a promise, because everyone heals at their own pace and your surgeon's own instructions always come first.

The first week

The early days are about rest and letting the face settle. There is swelling and some bruising, a feeling of tightness, and you will want your head elevated and your calendar clear. This is not the time to judge your result. A face in week one is a face mid-healing, and it looks nothing like where it is heading.

Around two weeks

This is the turning point for many people. The bigger swelling and bruising have eased, sutures are typically dealt with in this window, and a lot of patients feel comfortable in quiet, familiar company. Makeup and clothing choices can help with any residual bruising. You still will not be seeing the final result, but you will start to recognise yourself.

Do not judge your face in week one. Healing is not a straight line, and the early weeks look nothing like the finish.

Weeks three to six

Now the improvements become steadier and more visible. Most people are back to ordinary routines, gradually reintroducing exercise on their surgeon's guidance. Some tightness, numbness or firmness can linger, which is a normal part of the tissues settling rather than a sign anything is wrong.

Months two to twelve

The last refinements happen slowly and quietly. Residual swelling continues to resolve, scars mature and fade over months, and the result softens into something that simply looks like a well-rested version of you. Patience here is rewarded; the face at six months is more honest than the face at six weeks.

Please note: this is a general guide for understanding, not medical or aftercare advice. Your own recovery plan, restrictions and timeline should come from your operating surgeon and their team.

How to give yourself the smoothest recovery

  • Clear your schedule properly for the first couple of weeks, and arrange help at home.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions exactly, including sleeping position and activity limits.
  • Protect the skin from sun, and be patient with numbness and tightness.
  • Keep your follow-up appointments so healing can be monitored.

If recovery is the thing holding you back, it is worth raising directly. In a consultation with Dr Prateek Sharma, you can hear what recovery would realistically look like for your work, your life and your face. It also helps to read how long a facelift lasts, so you can weigh a short recovery against a long benefit.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to recover from a facelift?+

Most visible swelling and bruising settle over the first two to three weeks, and many people feel comfortable in quiet social settings around two weeks. The face keeps refining for several months as the last swelling resolves. Recovery is individual and your surgeon's instructions come first.

When can I go back to work after a facelift?+

Many people return to non-physical work within about two weeks, depending on how they heal and how public-facing their role is. Physical activity is reintroduced gradually on your surgeon's guidance. Everyone is different, so timelines are best confirmed in person.

Is a facelift recovery painful?+

Most patients describe tightness and discomfort rather than severe pain, managed with the medication and aftercare their surgeon provides. Numbness and firmness can linger for weeks as tissues settle, which is a normal part of healing.
